About Ortho Calculator

Ortho Calculator is a suite of tools designed to support evidence-based orthodontic treatment planning. It brings together clinically relevant formulas, simplified models, and practical assumptions to help clinicians evaluate space, arch coordination, extraction patterns, and overall treatment plans in a structured way.

The platform is intentionally neutral. It does not promote a specific treatment philosophy or technique, but instead focuses on making the underlying math transparent so clinicians can apply it within their own diagnostic approach.

Dr. Daniel Nikitas Richmond

Founder of Ortho Calculator Inc.

I am an orthodontist practicing in London, ON, Canada, with a particular interest in diagnosis and treatment planning. I completed my orthodontics training at the University of Toronto, followed by a craniofacial fellowship at New York University. Throughout my training, I became increasingly focused on the quantitative side of orthodontics.

That interest in evidence-based planning prompted the development of Ortho Calculator during residency. What began as a personal planning tool evolved into a broader platform designed to organize well-established orthodontic concepts into objective, usable frameworks that support clear clinical decision-making, and it continues to evolve today.

Acklowedgements

There are several individuals whose teaching, mentorship, and collaboration helped make the development of Ortho Calculator possible.

During dental school, I initially planned to pursue oral and maxillofacial surgery. Through the teaching and mentorship of Dr. Retrouvey, I was introduced to orthodontics as an enigmatic and intellectually demanding specialty, with a particular emphasis on diagnosis and treatment planning. This experience led me to recognize orthodontics as my true calling, especially for its potential to have a meaningful impact on patients’ confidence and self-esteem.

During orthodontic training, I am grateful to Dr. Vendittelli, Dr. Daskalogiannakis, and Dr. Mair for their guidance, instruction, and dedication to the scientific and quantitative foundations of orthodontic treatment planning. I also acknowledge Dr. Pradip Shetye for his mentorship during my craniofacial fellowship at New York University. I am especially thankful to my father, Dr. Jeff Richmond, whose clinical insight and collaboration—particularly in the development of space maintenance content—have contributed meaningfully to this platform.
